Applicants from institutions outside the U.S. must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing
The application consists of the following required materials, all of which must be received by the appropriate deadline for the application to be considered complete: Online application, statement of purpose, and unofficial transcript(s). A minimum of three (3), maximum of six (6) recommendation letters submitted online directly by the recommenders.* These letters can come from a wide range of individuals, such as research and academic advisors, instructors, and workplace supervisors. Official test scores reported by ETS. Stanford's institution code is 4704, no department code is needed. Please submit your unofficial transcript(s) from all post-secondary institutions you have attended for at least one year. If admitted to the MSE program, you will be asked to provide an official transcript(s). You'll be asked to provide a second official transcript if you get admitted to the program.
Three letters of recommendation are required. These letters can come from a wide range of individuals, such as research and academic advisors, instructors, and workplace supervisors. Up to six total letters can be submitted, including additional letters does not inherently benefit or hinder your application.
Online, unofficial transcript. Submit your unofficial transcript(s) from all post-secondary institutions you have attended for at least one year. If admitted to the MSE program, you will be asked to provide an official transcript(s). NOTE: An unofficial transcript(s) is all that is needed to be uploaded to the application. Official transcript(s) are ONLY required if admission is granted.
Students who wish to apply for admission to our graduate program 2022-2023 academic year are not required to take the GRE or submit a GRE score report as part of their application process.

The PhD program is designed to give students a broad and deep understanding of materials science and engineering so that they will have long and fruitful careers as researchers. Students who graduate from our program will be among the world's leading experts in the areas of their dissertation research. They also will have the intellectual tools to move into new research areas as the field grows and develops. During the first two years of the PhD program, students are required to take at least 10 courses from our core curriculum, attend the weekly colloquium lectures to learn about cutting-edge materials science research, locate a faculty research advisor and become involved in a research group.
