Applicants for admission must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited American college or university, or from a foreign institution of acceptable standing and accredited by the governing educational body of the country by the time of graduate matriculation. If at that time an admitted applicant does not hold a bachelor's degree, the Graduate School admission is void. If you are taking the TOEFL IBT, then the minimum score is a total of 80 points, with a minimum of 23 on the Speaking section. If you are taking the IELTS, the minimum score is 7.0.
A bachelor's degree or its equivalent, as well as an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale.

The Early Christian Studies M.A. is an interdisciplinary program offering training in philology, theology, history, liturgy, art history, and philosophy. Through coursework and close independent work with faculty, the program prepares students for eventual doctoral studies by developing student abilities in at least two ancient Christian languages and literatures, as well as imparting a broad knowledge of the intellectual, historical, and social contexts of early Christianity. The M.A. degree in Early Christian Studies (ECS) is a two-year interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Departments of Classics and Theology, with the participation of faculty in several other departments. The program is designed to prepare beginning graduate students for the advanced study of early Christianity and late antiquity in various disciplines and areas of interest. Early Christian Studies Program have gone on to top-ranked Ph.D. programs. Among the universities where ECS alumni have earned doctoral degrees or are currently students are Berkeley, Brown, Columbia, Catholic University of America, Chicago, Duke, Marquette, New York University, Oxford, Princeton, Princeton Theological Seminary, UCLA, and, of course, Notre Dame. Graduates of the ECS program have entered doctoral programs in a large number of different fields of study, including Ancient History, Armenian Studies, Classics, Early Christianity, Historical Theology, History, History of Christianity, Late Antiquity, Literature, Liturgical Studies, Medieval Studies, Near Eastern Studies, New Testament, Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, Patristics, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies, Syriac Studies, and Theology. Graduates have also won prestigious fellowships or gone on to study at renowned programs outside of the US (recently, in Oxford and in Leuven).
