The Child and Family Law emphasis prepares students for a career serving children, families and elders. Students studying family law at UMKC have the opportunity to work with nationally recognized family law scholars in exploring cutting-edge issues in the development of family law. Our extensive curriculum includes many opportunities to interact with members of the community and develop practice skills essential to this field. Students can clerk for judges in family court, represent adults who give permanent homes to children under the court's jurisdiction, represent victims of domestic violence, mentor teens in youth court, represent the state in child support proceedings and act as guardians ad litem for children.<br>Our strong connections to local and national family law judges and attorneys give students important networking opportunities. Students graduating with the emphasis have critical practice skills that serve them well, even if they choose not to specialize in child or family law.
