We welcome applications from highly qualified and motivated students for the M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees.
The complex problems surrounding the nexus of cities, water and energy demand that engineers have increased breadth and depth of knowledge. CAEE strives to provide students with the educational background and teamwork needed to innovate future solutions, technologies, and sustainable systems. We are dedicated to creative, comprehensive teaching and research that ranges from fundamental to applied.
Our many research centers provide graduate students with the opportunity to explore their areas of interest and to be a part of a supportive, intellectually stimulating community. With state-of-the-art facilities, the CAEE graduate program is designed to educate engineers who will be at the forefront of the profession in industry, academia, civil service, and beyond.
Applicants are expected to have an undergraduate degree in engineering. However, exceptional candidates with other undergraduate degrees can be considered for admission, but will be required to complete additional undergraduate leveling courses prior to beginning graduate work. The typical leveling courses required will depend on the student's background.
The department offers the Master of Science in Engineering degree in Civil Engineering and Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered only in Civil Engineering. Applicants interested in graduate studies in Architectural Engineering should apply to Civil Engineering.
A thorough understanding of key infrastructure materials'such as asphalt, concrete, steel, masonry, wood, polymers and compositesis essential to ensure a sustainable built environment. Materials engineers work closely with other engineers to integrate the use of innovative materials for planning, design, construction, forensics, and repair. The Infrastructure Materials Engineering specialty at UT Austin is particularly strong in the areas of concrete and asphalt materials, with emphasis on both mechanistic property development and field performance. We innovate and advance the state-of-the-art of traditional infrastructure materials and also research the creation of new, sustainable materials. We examine materials on multiple scales, ranging from chemical and microstructural examinations to full-scale field testing.
