Students having a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited school are eligible for direct admission to graduate study in Mechanical Engineering if their grade point is 3.3 or above (based on a 4.0 scale) during the MS graduate program. Students are allowed to apply for the Doctoral Program directly after receiving a bachelor's degree if their graduate point average is 3.3 or above (based on a 4.0 scale) in their undergraduate study. The MAE Department admission requirements listed below supplement the Graduate School requirements. Please note: only minimum requirements are listed here for reference purpose. Meeting the minimum requirements does NOT guarantee admission.
All students applying for admission to the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Program must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Only scores from exams taken within the previous two years and reported directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to New Mexico State University will be accepted. The suggested GRE score for students applying for graduate program is: Verbal + Quantitative > 294 (new scale) or > 1000 (old scale). The department graduate screening committee will not review application materials with GRE scores reported. The test scores need to send directly to the Graduate School. To be considered for admission to New Mexico State University, all international students must submit an official score of 550 or above on the paper-based, or 79 on the internet-based The TOEFL requirement may also be waived for students who have a current and official IELTS score of 6.5 or above.

The student's academic program is not judged satisfactory unless it prepares the student to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of Mechanical Engineering. The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy is indicative of distinguished achievement in the areas of scholarship and original research. Therefore, a dissertation of high quality is required of all doctoral students in Mechanical Engineering. Students must follow the degree requirements listed below to complete the Ph.D. course of study.<br>A minimum of 36 credit hours of coursework (500 level or above) beyond the Bachelor of Science degree, at least 18 of which must support the student's research area.<br>A minimum of 24 credit hours of research, M E 700 Doctoral Dissertation, which may include a maximum of 6 credit hours of M E 600 Doctoral Research. M E 600 Doctoral Research is intended for those students who have not completed the qualification examination, a prerequisite for M E 700 Doctoral Dissertation.<br>A student is required to have one refereed journal paper accepted and a second one accepted or in review by graduation. The Ph.D. dissertation can be a compilation and reformatted version of these published or accepted journal papers. Exceptions may be made on case by case basis by the Department Head.
