国际学生入学条件
Students applying from a master's degree program must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher on work beyond the B.S. degree. BSEE and BSCPE applicants must have a degree from an institution of higher learning that is recognized by the ECE department and a GPA of at least 3.5 on the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate work.
Applicants must submit to the Graduate School the same application materials required for M.S. applicants, plus a one- or two-page discussion of career goals and proposed areas of study.
Completed applications are routed to faculty in the interest area most closely aligned with the applicant's desired field of specialization. Faculty in the interest area then make recommendations to the Admissions Director or Graduate Administrative Committee regarding admission into the Ph.D. program and possible financial support.
The complete application includes
Virginia Tech Graduate School on-line application form, nonrefundable application fee $75.00.
An up-to-date, electronic copy of all official transcript(s) must be submitted with your on-line application. Please do not mail your official transcript(s) to the Graduate School until you have received an offer of admission from Virginia Tech. (Note that the ECE department does not require an official copy of your transcript(s).

Researchers in optics and photonics are using these technologies to overcome challenges in biological applications and high-risk systems. Applications include cancer research, disease diagnosis, and 3D imaging and pattern recognition. The low cost, compactness, and ever-improving quality of smartphones means that they have huge potential for mobile medicine. We are developing various smartphone-based, portable imaging systems to aid in diagnosing diseases. Approximately 10 percent of the population suffers from some type of infertility, and in vitro fertilization has become the dominant form of treatment. However, its success rate is low. To improve outcomes, we need methods for morphological assessment of gametes and embryos. We are developing novel optical microscopes for quantitative imaging of sperm cells, oocytes, and early embryos. These techniques offer deep sub-nanometer sensitivity and a high frame rate, capable of intensity, phase, and birefringence measurements in all dimensions. This allows us to quantify size, thickness, volume, and mass for quantitative quality assessment.
