Applicants must have received, prior to commencing graduate study, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute, college, or university. Although no single field of undergraduate specialization is required, applicants to the program must have a thorough undergraduate background in engineering and life sciences. They are expected to have mastered basic material in the following areas:
mathematics (calculus through differential equations)
physics (college physics with calculus including mechanics and electronics)
chemistry (organic and/or biochemistry)
materials science (introductory course or strength of materials)
biology (introductory human anatomy or physiology)
Unofficial Transcripts for Applicants: Unofficial copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended should be uploaded into the AY system at the time of application. For foreign institutions, include transcripts in the original language, plus official English translations if the original language is not English.
GRE Scores: Test scores are generally required for the graduate program.
Letters of Reference: We require at least three letters of personal reference from course instructors, research supervisors, or employers who are familiar with your abilities and performance.
All aspects of an application will be seriously considered during the evaluation process. However, typically successful applicants have a cumulative GPA that meets or exceeds ~3.5 and GRE scores of ~156 verbal, ~165 quantitative, ~4 analytical writing. International students should have a minimum composite TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test. However, students with composite TOEFL scores below 100 (internet-based test) may be required to enroll in English classes. The Department will also accept a minimum 7.5 IELTS score or 125 DUOLINGO score in lieu of the TOEFL.

The Department of Geology and Geophysics is a highly ranked earth science department offering graduate degrees in three programs: Geology (M.S./Ph.D.), Geophysics (M.S./Ph.D.), and Geological Engineering (M.S./M.S.Eng./Ph.D.). The department will consider applicants to all programs who have previously completed either a bachelor's or master's degree in geoscience or a related field. Although completion of a master's degree is not required for admission, competitive applicants to our Ph.D. program will be able to demonstrate previous research experience at the bachelor's or master's level.<br><br>Within the department, areas of research specialization include structural geology and tectonics, stable isotope geochemistry, metamorphic petrology, geochronology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, petroleum geology, paleontology, environmental geology, paleoclimatology, geothermics, ground water and surface water hydrology, igneous petrology, aqueous geochemistry, economic geology, exploration seismology, earthquake seismology, and electromagnetics.
