Our department is a small, friendly, and dynamic group that focuses considerable energy on our MS program. Faculty expertise includes the classic areas of igneous, metamorphic, structural, sedimentary geology and paleontology, with major support from the areas of geochemistry and geophysics. Our location in the extensive North Carolina coastal system, benefits our strong programs in marine geology, groundwater hydrology and biogeochemistry/geochemistry, paleontology-paleoecology, sedimentation, and stratigraphy. The nearby geologic record includes the Triassic basin deposits, a thick sequence of Cretaceous to Quaternary sediments, and the spectacular modern coastal estuarine, barrier island, continental shelf system of the mid-Atlantic continental margin. We also border the structurally complex Piedmont Province with its crystalline rocks and are near the classic Appalachian Province.<br><br><br><br>The M.S. degree is the terminal degree for most employment situations. Its completion indicates that the student has achieved some proficiency in (has mastered) independent research, writing, and project management, and has developed a solid background in geology.
