The field of geology encompasses so much more than just the study of rocks and minerals. Geologists may hold the key to finding new sources of energy. They make recommendations about ways to dispose of toxic waste, and they study natural disasters such as volcanoes, landslides, and floods. They play a vital role in developing environmentally friendly ways to live by analyzing the history of the earth. The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Tufts emphasizes student-faculty collaboration on research, independent study, and hands-on laboratory experience. X-ray technology, computer simulations, and other analytical equipment all contribute to the laboratory experience. Students get to use their rock hammers, maps, and compasses on outdoor research expeditions throughout the northeast and southwest regions of the United States.the Geological Sciences major, intended for students who wish to pursue graduate study in geology and related fields or entry level employment.Students considering a major in Geology or Geological Sciences should discuss their course selections with a faculty member in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences. This is particularly important because some upper level courses are offered in alternate years. Careful planning will give students the opportunity to participate in more course offerings, optional field trips, and student-faculty research as an undergraduate.
