The Chemical Engineering PhD degree at UC Santa Barbara is awarded to PhD candidates following successful defense of the dissertation. Students must first satisfy the candidacy requirements and advance to candidacy. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Duolingo English Test (DET). TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) 550, TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) and TOEFL iBT Home Edition 80, IELTS Academic and IELTS Indicator - Overall Band Score of 7.

Developing novel materials, devices, and processes to enable chemical transformations as well as capture, convert, and store energy in an efficient and sustainable manner are grand challenges facing the globe. Our faculty is involved in this endeavor at all scales, including: <br><br>Synthesis and characterization of energy-related and catalytic materials,<br>Engineering catalytic and biological systems to synthesize and transform chemical feedstocks,<br>Reaction rate theory and chemical process design,<br>Chemical manufacturing with process intensification, and (v) technoeconomic evaluation of large scale energy and chemical technologies.
