In addition to the general admission requirements for a doctoral degree at Western Michigan University a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline will be required Students with a Master of Science in mathematics or in a natural science discipline may also be admitted if they have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline The Bachelor of Science or Master of Science should be from a university recognized and approved by the Graduate Committee of the department Evidence of scholarship and potential for independent research in mechanical engineering must be presented to the Graduate Committee The level of achievement in mathematics and science courses which are prerequisites for success in doctoral studies in engineering will also be considered when evaluating the application The applicant must also submit the results of the general Graduate Record Examination a Statement of Purpose as well as three recommendation letters Prior to being admitted the student must identify a member of the departments graduate faculty who has agreed to advise the students research
To ensure adequate preparation for the graduate research subject enrollment in all courses must be approved by the doctoral advisor A minimum grade point average of 3.25 is required in the doctoral studies These graduation requirements complement the general university requirements
Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL 80 iBT graduate.
TOEFL Essential 8 Graduate.
International English Language Testing System IELTS Academic - 6.5 graduate.
Pearson Test of English Academic Module PTE - 54 graduate.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering is designed to intensify student knowledge and comprehension in the various disciplines of the subject, with emphasis on original research in a chosen area of specialty.<br>Mechanical and aerospace engineers solve problems. Mechanical engineers plan and design machines, tools, engines and other equipment or systems that produce or use power, such as instruments, controls, and machines as well as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic and heat transfer systems. Aerospace engineers design, develop, test and help produce commercial and military aircraft, surface effect vehicles, missiles, and other related hardware or systems for inside and outside the atmosphere.
