Mechanical engineers design and develop many of the products, systems and technologies that move everyday life. Mechanical engineers apply mathematics, physics, chemistry, and other sciences, together with computers, instrumentation, and other tools to create a wide range of hardware, software, and systems.<br><br>The Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program at the University of New Mexico provides graduates with the necessary skills to compete in this rapidly changing discipline. In addition, the BSME provides a solid, scientific foundation for other degrees such as the MBA, MD, DDS, etc. UNM ME students have the opportunity to work on energy and transportation projects ranging from racecars to high altitude balloon launches and from building efficiency to alternative energy systems.<br><br>Even our Mechanical Engineering building is an energy conservation lab designed by UNM faculty and students. The building offers hands-on lessons in the mechanics of thermal storage, energy efficiency, smart grid technology, and more. A program that prepares individuals to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of physical systems used in manufacturing and end-product systems used for specific uses, including machine tools, jigs and other manufacturing equipment, stationary power units and appliances, engines, self-propelled vehicles, housings and containers, hydraulic and electric systems for controlling movement, and the integration of computers and remote control with operating systems.
