In addition to meeting the minimum admission requirements of the two universities and the Herff College of Engineering, applicants should meet the following criteria:
An appropriate bachelor's degree (biomedical, chemical, electrical, mechanical, or others as defined by the Joint Program),
An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 from an accredited college or university,
It is recommended to obtain a GRE score above 300 (combined verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning) including a minimum 154 on the quantitative reasoning,
Applicants whose native language is other than English and who have earned neither a bachelor's nor a master's degree from a college or university in an English-speaking country must have achieved a TOEFL score of at least 213/79 on the computerbased/Internetbased exam or an IELTS score of 6.5 (earned within 2 years prior to application). Any applicant whose first language is not English but who has earned a baccalaureate or master's degree from a college or university in an English-speaking country where instruction was in English may be exempted from the requirement for the TOEFL or IELTS examination.
These are the minimum program admission requirements. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the Joint Program. Applicants are further advised that the department reserves the right to deny some applications for admission because of limited availability of faculty, funding, or physical facilities to accommodate the applicant's research interests. In unusual circumstances where the above admission requirements cannot be met, an applicant may seek exceptions by contacting the Coordinator of Graduate Studies for the Joint Program.

Biomedical Engineering is a broad field that focuses on improving health with the use of engineering principles. For example, designing new implants for those who suffer from hip fractures, developing tools sensing electrical signals to detect heart problems, discovering drugs to fight cancer and other illnesses are all possible job descriptions for BME graduates. Our graduate program is a collaboration with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). We offer three graduate degrees in BME: MS degree with project, MS degree with thesis, and PhD with doctoral dissertation. Students can choose to work in the areas of Biosensors, Biomechanics, Bioelectricity, and Biomaterials. The mission of the Department of Biomedical Engineering is: To educate students in the Biomedical Engineering discipline so as to prepare them for immediate careers at the interface of life sciences and engineering and for advancement in their careers in industry, the professions and community.<br>The University of Memphis (UofM) - University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering offers M.S. (thesis and non-thesis) and Ph.D. degrees. The Joint program takes advantage of the resources of the engineering and basic science programs at UofM and the medical and clinical programs at UTHSC. All students entering the graduate biomedical program are matriculated in the Joint Program with their degree awarded from both institutions.
