The Graduate School recommends applicants have at least a 3.0 GPA or B average when applying.
For transcripts from schools abroad, the UMBC Graduate School will accept official WES (World Education Services) ICAP Course-by-Course evaluations but note that these evaluations are not required.
Students who are unable to meet the minimum GPA standards may still be admitted to graduate study by demonstrating outstanding performance on one or more of the graduate aptitude tests or by providing letters of recommendation from evaluators who can speak to the applicant's performance as a student or in a professional capacity.
Standards for admission to a doctoral program are generally higher than those for admission to a master's program. The terms of this admission are based on specific recommendations made by the applicant's department in conjunction with the Graduate School.

UMBC's Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department offers both M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Computer Engineering. Below you will find information on the Computer Engineering graduate program, research areas in Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as information about the application process. The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering has 33 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 15 research faculty, four full-time lecturers and over 20 affiliate and part-time adjunct faculty. Current research concentrations include artificial intelligence, graphics and visualization, computer networks and systems, database and knowledge management, algorithms and computation theory, communications and signal processing, microelectronics, photonics and optical communications. The department has approximately 1100 undergraduate students in two degree programs: computer science and computer engineering. It has nearly 600 graduate students in four graduate programs: computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering and cybersecurity.
