A Statement of purpose is required:
Please describe your plans for graduate study or research and for your future occupation or profession. Include any information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and qualifications for graduate study at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Recommended length is a concise 2-4 pages.
A Personal History Statement is also required:
Required of all applicants. This statement will be used in conjunction with your application for graduate admission and financial support. Note that the Personal History Statement should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose. Recommended length is a concise 1-3 pages.
UC Santa Cruz is interested in a diverse and inclusive graduate student population. In an essay, discuss how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Include any educational, familial, cultural, economic, or social experiences, challenges, or opportunities relevant to your academic journey, how you might contribute to social or cultural diversity within your chosen field, and/or how you might serve educationally underrepresented segments of society with your degree. The minimum GPA requirement for UC graduate admissions is 3.0. International applicants need not convert their international GPA to the U.S. GPA scale. For those choosing to take the IELTS, a minimum overall score of 7 from the IELTS test is required for admission. toefl 570 on the paper-based test, 230 on the computer-based test, and 89 on the internet-based test.

The Department of Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), offers M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. The areas of research include Networks (wireless networks, high-speed networks, sensor networks, algorithms and protocols for computer communication, quality of service), Robotics (autonomous vehicles, sensor fusion, exoskeletons, medical robots, biomolecular control), Computer System Design (CAD of VLSI, computer architecture, parallel and distributed systems, VLSI and FPGA design, placement and routing, fault diagnosis), Sensing and Interaction (computer vision, remote sensing, telemetry, computer-based collaboration, assistive and rehabilitative technology, human-computer interaction). The computer engineering faculty members enjoy a close relationship with the applied mathematics and statistics, computer science, electrical engineering, and computational biology faculty members. Faculty members carry out joint research projects, supervise students, and teach courses outside their own departments. The department has many ties to nearby industry, employing computer professionals as visiting faculty members and arranging for students to gain practical research experience through work in industrial labs.
