Research focuses on organic and inorganic nanoparticle synthesis and manipulation, polymer thin films and functional surfaces, functional nanofibers, inorganic thin films and organic/inorganic hybrid materials, bio-nano-materials and structures, nanostructure self-assembly, as well as nano-materials and structures for electronic, optoelectronic, sensing and energy conversion systems. The path to a Ph.D. is a challenging one. With hard work and the support of the department faculty, staff and peers, our students reach the end, well prepared for their next step. New graduate students are assigned to a specific faculty advisor and research group at the end of the first semester in residence. To help the process, students are provided with descriptions of all available research projects, and a presentation about each project is given in October by the responsible faculty member. Graduate students spend most of their time with their fellow research group members, not their faculty advisor, and a group's students and postdocs will often provide the most useful information regarding advisor selection. Chemical engineering has been central to the university's mission since its founding. The first classes in the field met in 1899, and the first graduates earned their degrees in 1925. Today, we bring that historic commitment and a forward-facing approach to bear on modern problems.
