A relevant master's degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Renewable Energy, Photovolltaics, Optical coatings, Hydrophobic coatings, Optics.
IELTS: 6.5 Overall with 6.0 in each individual element.
TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 92, with not less than 22 in each test

The provision of clean, sustainable energy is one of the greatest challenges facing modern society and solar photovoltaics (PV) provide the best opportunity for rapidly expanding renewable energy. The energy from sunlight falling on the earth's surface in one hour is the same as that used on earth in a year, and yet PV electricity provides only a very small fraction of the energy used in the world. PV is becoming increasingly economical, and is now cost-competitive with conventional, fossil fuel, electricity generation. CREST at Loughborough University is one of the leading centres for PV research. Applications are invited to join the CREST team and conduct research in solar energy and be awarded a PhD degree. The cover glass on solar modules could be radically improved. The glass reflects 8% of incident light reducing the power output. In addition, soiling of the glass by dust and grime can reduce the light transmitted into the solar panel by 20% or more. These losses may be overcome with the development and application of an anti-soiling and anti-reflection coating. This is a challenging project because solar panels are outdoors 24/7 and can be subject to severe environmental stresses. So the long term durability of the coating is a key requirement. CREST has the expertise, facilities and industrial contacts to succeed with this vitally important development.
