You should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in mechanical, manufacturing or electrical engineering/automation, applied mathematics or a related subject. A relevant master's degree and/or experience in mechanical, robotics/computer Science and/or control engineering will be an advantage.
IELTS: 6.5 Overall with 6.0 in each individual element.
TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 92, with not less than 22 in each test

Dangerous and difficult tasks are carried out by human operators on a daily basis which are not safe or appropriate for them to be doing. We should be improving the lives of people by allowing them to perform activites which do not put them at adverse risk. Traditionally Unnmaned systems are used for tasks such as inspection and surveillance. This project will look at opportunities for UAV's, ground vehicles or structure mounted automation solutions (climbing robots) to be either remotley operated or monitored by an operator in dangerous environments such as but not limited to Nuclear, Oil Rigs, Construction, and Ship Building. The project will investigate the models, dynamics, control and interactions required. The fundamental modelling and control investigation will be underpinned with the development of prototype, proof of concept experimental validation. The expectation is that the project will research novel methods of operating in the environments, which may include control systems, manufacturing methods, advanced sensing and intelligent automation. The project will have the oppourtunity to work within the Intelligent Automation Centre https://www.intelligent-automation.org.uk/ which is a multidisciplinary centre for advanced robotics and digital automation. The centre undertakes fundamental research to create new intelligent automation solutions that will deliver breakthroughs in productivity, agility, efficiency and resilience. The Centre brings together a wide range of expertise from manufacturing, mechanical, electrical and systems engineering, computer science, design, mathematics and economics. We work very closely with our industrial, RTO and academic partners to deliver excellence from original concept through to industrialisation.
