The minimum requirements for admission to the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's (FoMD's) Graduate Programs (See FoMD Graduate Programs) are outlined below. Admissions to FoMD graduate programs are made on a competitive basis. Though an applicant may satisfy the minimum admission requirements, acceptance into a graduate program is not guaranteed. The decision to admit an applicant to a graduate program is made by the department and program.
Graduate program entrance requirements for FoMD Graduate Programs are defined at two different levels:
The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) sets the minimum entrance requirements that must be met by all graduate students at the UofA, regardless of program (See GPS Graduate Admissions).
FoMD has entrance requirements over and above those set by GPS that must be met by graduate students in all the FoMD graduate programs. The following documents are required to be accepted into a graduate program:
Three letters of references with at least two from academic sources to be submitted via the online portal.
Statement of research interests to be submitted via the online portal.
Curriculum Vitae to be submitted via the online portal.
Transcripts to be submitted via the online portal.
Supervisor Confirmation and Applicant Funding Information form.
The minimum English language proficiency test scores required for admission into the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's Graduate Programs are:
TOEFL (internet-based): A minimum overall score of 95 with a minimum of 21 on each individual skill area.
Academic IELTS: A minimum overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each band.

The Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging offers the PhD degree. Completion of the degree requires a minimum 3 graduate-level courses (after a MSc degree or equivalent) or 6 graduate-level courses (after a BSc degree), and a research thesis that must be defended. Course requirements are recommended by the Supervisor and Supervisory Committee based on the background of the student and the research project. Normally, a student without a MSc or equivalent will first enroll in the MSc program and then transfer to the PhD program with the recommendation/approval of the Supervisory Committee. Courses taken in the MSc program will be counted towards the PhD degree. The normal time for completion of the degree is 4-5 years The Department requires that all PhD students receive financial support.<br><br>The Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging offers both MSc and PhD graduate degrees in diverse areas involving basic, applied, and clinical sciences. Our research demonstrates a direct or indirect relationship to the advancement of diagnostic imaging. <br><br>The Department is situated within the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre (WMC), which includes the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH), Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, and the Stollery Children's Hospital, and is one of the largest hospital complex in Western Canada. UAH is also considered one of Canada's leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually.
