Geology is the study of the earth and other celestial bodies. In addition to bedrock and the loose sediment which covers it, geologists also investigate the atmosphere and hydrosphere, the history of the planet and life (paleontology, a branch of geology). Geologists also study modern processes operating on the surface and in the interior of the Earth and other planets and moons in the solar system. Our graduates are employed in a variety of jobs ranging from environmental monitoring and pollution clean-up to hydrocarbon and mineral exploration. A high percentage of students graduating from our program continue on to complete graduate degrees, both from Lakehead and other universities, and secure jobs in applied and pure research. The geology program at Lakehead is a hands-on learning experience. The university is located amidst the rugged grandeur of the Canadian Shield. This provides a readily accessible outdoor classroom and laboratory. The geology program takes advantage of this setting by convening classes outside when possible, conducting numerous weekend field trips and offering two extended field schools. Small class sizes add to this learning experience and allow access to state-of-the-art analytical equipment by third and fourth year students. This hands-on learning experience creates a superior environment in which to study geology.
