Scientific investigators in the interstices of biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and physics all employ chemical principles and techniques to forge new paths and explore solutions to the most pressing scientific questions. Undergraduates at Tufts get all the benefits of a liberal arts environment while gaining access to a world-class chemistry department. Researchers work on the forefront of new and exciting fields such as environmental management, electrooptics, and biotechnology, while still maintaining a high level of personal interaction with undergraduates. The study of chemistry is appropriate for a wide variety of careers including, medicine, law, physical and social sciences, engineering, and public policy. The chemistry department at Tufts provides both basic and advanced chemistry education with all the benefits of a major research university but with the environment of a small liberal arts college. We offer a variety of courses, newly expanded and improved facilities, an active teaching and research faculty, and a favorable faculty to student ratio. Students who participate in research receive a great deal of personal attention from their faculty adviser, and have excellent opportunities for undertaking senior projects and honors theses. They may choose from a broad range of cutting edge research projects, some of which are nationally and internationally known. The Tufts faculty are involved in all the traditional areas of chemical research, as well as many new and exciting interdisciplinary endeavors. The American Chemical Society (ACS) certified major is recommended for those whose career goals include employment as a professional chemist or graduate school in chemistry. Students earning this degree will receive certification from the ACS which, for those students proceeding directly from college to employment, often results in higher salaries than those for non-certified majors. In addition, graduate schools and fellowship selection committees may view certified majors more favorably than non-certified ones. Courses leading to a certified major include undergraduate research, which offers the student an opportunity to work closely with members of the research faculty in the department.
