Chemistry is the science that studies the composition, structure and properties of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. Chemicals and chemical reactions are everywhere around us. They define how we live and how we think. The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to produce graduates who are exceptional chemists and problem solvers. The knowledge and skills our students obtain give them the flexibility to succeed in any work environment. A university degree in chemistry opens doors to a great many careers in academic and industrial research including product development and quality control in diverse industries such as pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals to name just a few. Also, chemistry graduates are well prepared for further education in fields such as medicine, law, business, environmental regulation and education. The Department of Chemistry is well equipped for both teaching and research, with small class sizes ensuring that students have ready access to instructors and advanced instrumentation. The four-year HBSc (Chemistry) program is at the core of the undergraduate offerings and provides the greatest flexibility in terms of post-graduate education, health-related studies and employment. The HBSc program also includes the opportunity to conduct a year-long original research project. The Department also offers a joint four-year Honours BSc (Biology and Chemistry) program and BSc (Biology and Chemistry) program.
