Master's degree in Physics or equivalent
Normally a student wishing to enter the Ph. D. program should have or expect to receive an appropriate master's degree. However, an applicant who is able to furnish evidence of outstanding ability may apply for admission to the Ph. D. program directly from the B. Sc. level.
Students who have completed secondary schooling, an undergraduate program, or a graduate program at a recognized institution where the language of instruction is English will normally not require an English proficiency test. If the institution is located outside of Canada and/or the language of instruction is not clearly indicated on the official transcript, applicants are advised to provide a letter from their university stating the language of instruction.
TOEFL An aggregate score of 80 (92 for graduate programs with higher English proficiency requirements)
IELTS - An average band score of 6.5 or higher on the academic test.

The Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography at Memorial University of Newfoundland has a well-established graduate studies program backed by a strong tradition of research. The Department has offered MSc programs since the inception of graduate studies at Memorial in 1960 and its first PhD program was created in 1969. In the present day, our students are supervised by faculty with international experience, connections, and recognition. Our research programs receive generous funding from NSERC, the CFI, and other organisations. Our labs and computer facilities are equipped to offer students world-class research opportunities.<br><br>Research opportunities in physical oceanography include theoretical, computational, experimental and observational studies of planetary fluid dynamics, glacial ice sheet dynamics, acoustic observation methods, instrument development, and global climate modeling. Research in experimental and theoretical/computational condensed matter physics falls into three broad categories: hard condensed matter, involving solids with high melting points, ultra-low temperatures, and quantum mechanical effects, soft condensed matter, involving liquids, colloids and polymers, proteins, lipids, viruses and cells, and applied physics, involving sensors and photonics.<br><br>Other research interests in physics include particle physics and black hole physics.
