Students with a concentration in graphic design are trained to combine words and images so that they can use both in tandem to form powerful new messages. Using a combination of theoretical projects and real client interaction, students are encouraged to take an expansive view of design's possibilities as they partner with other artists, writers, and clients, as well as work independently to shape communication. Graphic designers are?first and foremost?artists. Designers receive extensive training in both fine art and publication design techniques. Additionally, they receive the benefits of leaving the university prepared for an ever-expanding choice of careers in publishing, graphic design, advertising, and other aligned industries. The graphic design program focuses on the development of a series of rigorous, problem-solving, experiential educational opportunities in tandem with the development of technological skills in order to grow a range of abilities (including flexibility) that respond to the ever-changing (and unforeseeable), challenges of the millennium's communication design needs. There has never been a more exciting time to be a graphic designer. At the forefront of a visually engaged culture, designers complement the written word to inspire and persuade, bring organization and structure to data, and make clear the obscure. In the School of Art's Graphic Design Program, we train designers to combine words and images so that they can use both in tandem to form powerful new messages.
