For admission to this program, a bachelor's degree with a major in physics or courses in the following subjects or their equivalents is expected: general physics, modern physics, electricity and magnetism, physical optics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, three semesters of calculus, and a course in differential equations. IU's Department of Physics is known for conducting world-leading research across a wide portfolio of sub-disciplines in physics, while also cultivating knowledge in both graduate and undergraduate students. We pay close attention to mentoring, advising, and professional development. While our research involves inquiry into vast and intractable problems, our department is interactive, friendly, and personal. Our department is home to an acclaimed association of research professors. Our faculty conduct research into all of the traditional areas of physics as well as the most important interdisciplinary subjects. Their activities include collaboration with researchers around the world at other universities, institutions, and laboratories. Investigation of new and emerging fields is a high priority.
