Master's degree in Physics or equivalent
Normally a student wishing to enter the Ph. D. program should have or expect to receive an appropriate master's degree. However, an applicant who is able to furnish evidence of outstanding ability may apply for admission to the Ph. D. program directly from the B. Sc. level.
Students who have completed secondary schooling, an undergraduate program, or a graduate program at a recognized institution where the language of instruction is English will normally not require an English proficiency test. If the institution is located outside of Canada and/or the language of instruction is not clearly indicated on the official transcript, applicants are advised to provide a letter from their university stating the language of instruction.
TOEFL - Paper-based score of 550 or higher, or Internet-based with a score of 80 or higher.
IELTS - An average band score of 6.5 or higher on the academic test.

The PhD is offered in Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, or Physical Oceanography. The program involves three courses, a comprehensive exam and a thesis, and can be completed in four years of full-time study. The Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography at Memorial University of Newfoundland has a well-established graduate studies program backed by a strong tradition of research. The Department has offered MSc programs since the inception of graduate studies at Memorial in 1960 and its first PhD program was created in 1969. In the present day, our students are supervised by faculty with international experience, connections, and recognition. Our research programs receive generous funding from NSERC, the CFI, and other organisations. Our labs and computer facilities are equipped to offer students world-class research opportunities.
