Applicants must hold or be eligible for initial teacher certification.We review all applications individually and holistically, but our expectation is that successful candidates for admission to any NYU Steinhardt MA program in teacher education will have a minimum 3.0 undergraduate grade point average. Special consideration may be granted to strong candidates with a GPA below 3.0.You must have the equivalent of a four-year US bachelor's degree to be considered for admission.Test of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TOEFL). Scores are valid for two years from the date taken. Successful candidates score a 100 on the Internet based exam or 600 on the paper based exam.The International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Official scores are valid for two years from the date taken. Successful candidates achieve a band score of 7.

Prepare to help children from birth through grade 6 gain the reading and writing skills needed for academic success. You'll develop your expertise as a literacy specialist in general education or within a content discipline through course work and field experiences, and become eligible for the New York State Literacy Specialist Certificate.Nationally recognized, full-time faculty members will teach most of your courses, ensuring that you learn:Explicit techniques for teaching reading and writing skills to pre-kindergarten and elementary school students of all learning levels.Methods for meeting the literacy needs within specific subject areas such as science, math, English, and social studies.Supportive strategies for the literacy and language development of diverse learners at varying developmental stages, skill levels, and socio-cultural contexts.A diagnostic-intervention protocol to guide all children's progress toward English Language Arts (ELA) standards.
