All applicants must complete and submit the following:
The online application form (applicants will be required to pay the application fee via credit card). Learn more about UVic's Faculty of Graduate Studies application process.
Two confidential assessment reports provided by two references, who can be a professional colleague, professor or other academic authority, or an Indigenous Language Authority or recognized equivalent confirming fluency in an Indigenous language (admission via modified academic requirements). Forms will automatically be sent to your referees during online application process via email.
Statement of Intent (500 word max). State your goals with respect to your education and how you would like to build on your practical experience in Indigenous Language Revitalization in Indigenous Communities. Submitted electronically during the online application process.
Transcripts (can be unofficial transcripts), submitted electronically during online application process.
We require a minimum score of 90 from the internet-based TOEFL (IBT). You must also score at least 20 points each in the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. We require a minimum score of 575 on the paper-based TOEFL. We require minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS. No individual component can have a score lower than 6.0. We will only accept results from the Academic IELTS.

In Indigenous Education, you'll lead efforts toward the revitalization of Indigenous languages. You'll learn the skills for successful language projects in communities undergoing language recovery. This program is accessible to those who cannot leave their communities for more than a few weeks at a time. The MILR program is the only one of its kind in Canada. The program is delivered in partnership with the Department of Linguistics, and students can exit with a graduate certificate after four courses and/or ladder into the master's degree program. To develop skills for successful language projects in community & leadership in recovery, revitalization and maintenance of Indigenous languages. To recognize & accredit expertise that exists. To develop language scholars to support post-secondary instruction in maintenance of Indigenous languages and culture. To increase language capacity in BC Indigenous communities by meeting the needs of language and culture revitalization teachers and researchers. To be accessible to learners who cannot leave their communities for more than a few weeks at a time.
