Admission to the Graduate School is open to anyone holding a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university. In cases, where a program's accrediting body allows alternate admissions standards, exceptions may be made. Applicants should have completed undergraduate or graduate work of sufficient quality and scope to enable them to successfully pursue graduate study. The University of Memphis offers equal educational opportunity to all persons without regard to race, religion, sex, creed, color, national origin or disability.
Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor's degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents.
GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field.
English proficiency test scores required by the University:
Duolingo English Test- For students affected by test center closures due to COVID-19, the University is temporarily accepting Duolingo as an alternative. 100 or higher on the overall score, all sub scores must be at least 80.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Institution code 1459. TOEFL - 550 or higher on the paper version, 79 or higher on the internet-based test
IELTS (International English Language Testing System- 6.0 or higher
PTE (Pearson Test of English) - 53 or higher
A grade point average of 3.25 at the graduate level and undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher,
Pass all sections of the CORE Academic Skills for Educators,
Pass the Praxis II Content Knowledge Exam required by the State of Tennessee for the licensure area being pursued.

Students who plan to pursue a graduate program of studies leading to teacher licensure must submit a formal application to the College of Education Teacher Education Program (TEP). Students are encouraged to apply for admission into TEP as soon as they enroll in any College of Education courses.
TEP admissions deadlines are September 15 for fall and January 31 for spring.
Requirements for provisional admission into TEP include:
A grade point average of 3.25 at the graduate level and undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher,
Pass all sections of the CORE Academic Skills for Educators,
Pass the Praxis II Content Knowledge Exam required by the State of Tennessee for the licensure area being pursued.

Requirements for full admission to TEP must be completed prior to the Clinical Teaching Semester and/or the semester candidates enroll in ICL 7993. They include:
3.25 graduate grade point average
Passed Praxis II licensure exams
To be admitted to the MAT program a candidate must complete an application through the Office of Graduate Admissions which includes an official transcript reflecting an earned bachelor's degree with a 2.75 or higher grade point average from an accredited institution. Applicants with a successful professional career may appeal this grade point average requirement. Documentation of a ''successful professional career'' is necessary and may include, but is not limited to, items such as an administrators' letter of recommendation, teacher evaluations, lesson plans, teaching video, etc.

The Early Childhood Education programs prepare educators to work with young children from birth through age eight years. The UofM Early Childhood teacher licensure programs and advanced Master's degree program for teachers and administrators are nationally recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children as meeting NAEYC standards. ECEd teacher licensure programs are offered at both the undergraduate (BSEd) and graduate (MAT) levels. This program is for individuals seeking a license to teach in prekindergarten, kindergarten and primary grade settings. Advanced ECEd graduate programs include the Master of Science (MS) degree and Doctor of Education (EdD). The MS degree is for teachers and other professionals seeking advanced preparation in Early Childhood. The degree is for those seeking teaching and research positions in colleges and universities. Students seeking licensure and the MAT degree must take a minimum of 30-46 graduate semester hours, depending on program and licensure area. Minimum hours may increase depending on licensure requirements.
