Official transcripts of undergraduate and graduate study
Two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant's academic background and aptitude for graduate work, specifying in detail the applicant's capabilities for doctoral study and for future performance and scholarship. At least one letter from a college/university professor is preferred.
A written statement of 500 to 1000 words (maximum) indicating the intended area of focus in the doctoral program and the applicant's present interests and career goals
The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor's degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. All applicants who will be attending the University on a student visa and who are not native speakers of English and are not graduates of The University of Memphis must supply a minimum score of 550 on the paper, a 210 on the computer-based, or 79 on the internet based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 6.0.

The ICL Department offers one undergraduate degree--a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED) and four graduate degrees: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) the Master of Science (MS), the Educational Specialist (EdS) and the Doctor of Education (EdD). We also offer certificates in Applied Behavior Analysis, Instructional Design and Technology, and Urban Education. And we offer Endorsements for Reading Specialist and School Library Specialist. The mission of the Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership is to prepare our graduates with the content knowledge, skills and dispositions informed by teaching, research, and service, to become reflective practitioners and collaborative professional leaders within diverse settings focusing on urban education. Guiding Principles: Understand identities, cultures, and histories to engage communities, neighborhoods, and families. Promote an intentional and deliberate focus on social justice, equity and power. Approach teaching and learning as moral and political acts that are socially constructed and culturally mediated. Link theory and practice in all aspects of the preparation of educators. Prepare diverse educators to serve historically marginalized populations in urban and other high needs areas.
