The Romance Studies department offers a demanding academic program designed to cultivate a sophisticated global perspective. Students develop expertise in languages, literature, and visual arts within a worldwide context, mastering advanced research skills and theoretical frameworks. This comprehensive education equips graduates to analyze diverse cultural products and contribute insightful interpretations.<br><br>French Language & Literature: MA in French Language & Literature requires an excellent command of written and spoken French, eight courses on French literature, and successful completion of a comprehensive examination. Eight courses must be completed on French literature, cinema, theory, or cultural studies at the 500 level or above. All offered 800 level French classes are required.<br><br>Learning outcomes:<br><br>French Language & Literature: Upon completion of the MA in French Language & Literature program, students will demonstrate an advanced understanding of French language and literature across historical and global contexts. They will possess refined writing and research skills suitable for professional environments, coupled with a strong ethical foundation. Graduates will achieve near-native fluency in French, enabling effective written and oral communication with native speakers. The program equips students with the pedagogical expertise to teach advanced high school French courses and the foundational knowledge to pursue careers as language instructors at the collegiate level.<br><br>The Master of Arts in French Language and Literature provides comprehensive training in all areas of French studies. Students achieve an in-depth knowledge of French and Francophone literature, its history and its major works. They also develop an advanced understanding of the traditions, aims, and methods of scholarly research in the field.<br><br>Many of our MA graduates have gone on to doctoral study, while others have pursued careers in fields such as education and managing international study programs.<br><br>Students undertaking the terminal MA program normally complete their degree in 12 months.<br><br>Eight courses are taken during the academic year, consisting of a theory seminar, a pedagogy class, and six classes on French literature and film.<br>Students spend the summer preparing for the comprehensive exam, which is typically taken in late August.
