This major gives students verbal fluency in Spanish and imparts knowledge of Spanish and Spanish American literatures. Students can develop literary appreciation and critical methods, and broaden cultural and intellectual vistas. Students who have had three or more years of Spanish in high school or the equivalent may start their electives immediately. As well as being the primary language for tens of millions in the United States, Spanish is one of the world's most widely spoken languages. Proficiency in Spanish language and literature is increasingly valuable in business, teaching, translation, and other professional careers. Students who choose to study Spanish may select two courses at the 3000-level or above, from the Spanish section of the department. To complete their minors, students must enroll in an appropriate capstone course. Any 4000 or 5000-level course in Spanish will serve as the capstone course for the Tier III Minor requirement.
