The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and History is designed for students who wish to combine advanced study of the Spanish language with a comprehensive background in history. The Spanish coursework included in the Spanish and History major will enable students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and foster understanding between cultures in our global society. The required coursework in History aims to illuminate the human condition, providing the context for defining one's place in the world and giving meaning to our endeavors against the backdrop of our heritage. The combination of these two areas allows students to enhance their skills and gain a more worldly perspective by studying both the language and history of the Spanish-speaking world. The BA in Spanish and History prepares students for a variety of career paths, including law school and legal practice, primary and secondary education, government and international diplomacy, and work with non-governmental organizations (NGOs).The study of language and history at the University of Delaware is part of a broad, multicultural education that is integral to success in many different fields in today's global environment. In Spanish courses, a proficiency-oriented, communicative approach develops speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, while an emphasis on social and cultural knowledge equips students to interact within the target culture confidently and successfully. In history courses, students will gain an appreciation for the past events and transformations that have led to today's global society, helping to comprehend their place within it. Opportunities abound for access to multilingual communities through technology, as well as through study abroad programs hosted by both departments.
