The French program at the University of Utah facilitates a deeper understanding of French and Francophone (French-speaking) cultures through the study of French language, literature, and society. Within the Department of World Languages & Cultures, the French program focuses on individual students, helping them develop the broad range of language and culture skills to function professionally in the French-speaking world. These skills are built into each stage of the coursework. The program curriculum begins with intensive grammar and progresses through the history of French literary and cultural production, covering topics such as French and Francophone literary traditions, film, romance, art, nationhood, otherness, and identity. The U's French program provides excellent preparation for K-12 teaching, pursuing graduate work, and entering a variety of professions where proficiency, reading, writing, and critical thinking skills are paramount.

Students wishing to focus on a topic in-depth may complete an undergraduate research project, Honors students undertake an undergraduate thesis, working closely with one faculty member in French, many students participate in learning abroad programs in France or a Francophone country.
