The department boasts one of the most prestigious and innovative programs in the country. Students with an interest in the Spanish and Portuguese languages, and/or in the literatures and cultures of Spain and Portugal, Spanish America, and Brazil, can take a wide range of interdisciplinary courses with a world-class faculty. The department offers a total of six majors: Spanish and Latin American Literatures and Cultures, Luso-Brazilian Language and Cultures, Latin American Studies, Iberian Studies, Romance Languages, and Spanish and Linguistics. In addition, minors are offered in Spanish, Portuguese, Latin American Studies, and Iberian Studies. An honors program for highly qualified students culminates in the writing of an honors thesis during the student's senior year. Students majoring in the department are encouraged to participate in the NYU in Madrid or NYU in Buenos Aires program or in one of NYU's exchange programs in Latin America.
