A doctoral dissertation must constitute an in-house research and represent a distinct contribution to knowledge. It must demonstrate knowledge of previous work in the field and demonstrate the ability to plan and perform research, organize results, and advocate the process and conclusions in a scholarly manner. The research work presented must correspond to the current standards of the discipline, the thesis must also clearly show how its content advances knowledge in the field. Finally, the thesis must be written in accordance with the standards of academic and scholarly expression and publication in the public domain. Students enrolled in our doctoral program have a master's degree in the discipline (or equivalent). After a two-semester schooling, they submit their thesis project in the second year and have one year to prepare a preliminary examination for the writing of their thesis. The whole process normally takes four to five years.
