Consideration for admission to the Graduate School will be given to applicants holding a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, or the equivalent. Applicants for admission must present evidence that they have had the necessary academic preparation to enable them to pursue the graduate program for which they are applying. The Graduate School has no fixed minimum grade point average requirement for admission; however, the applicant should have a strong undergraduate record. Students who have undertaken graduate work at another institution must be in good standing at that institution to be eligible for admission to The University of Maine.
The Graduate School requires a minimum score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL or equivalent.

The History Department offers MA and PhD programs of study in a wide range of fields. MA areas of concentration include U.S., Canadian, European, and East Asian history, environmental history, the history of labor, technology, and immigration, women's history, international history, the history of cartography, and spatial and digital history. The PhD program specializes in U.S. history, Canadian-American history (including borderland studies), and international history. MA, thesis option: 30 credit hours of coursework in History, including HTY 647, a 600-level research seminar, a 500 and/or 600-level course outside of the student's research area, Responsible Conduct Research, 5 thesis credits from HTY 699, and at least 15 credits (normally 5 courses) drawn from graduate and advanced undergraduate courses. MA, non-thesis option: 30 credit hours of coursework in History, with at least 24 credits (normally 8 courses) at the graduate level. In lieu of the thesis, students in this program take two additional 600-level seminars and must pass a comprehensive oral examination covering their coursework. MA areas of concentration include U.S., Canadian, European, and Asian history, environmental history, the history of labor and immigration, women's history, international and military history, the history of cartography, and spatial and digital history.
