For admission to the doctoral program, applicants should complete the MA degree, document a record of solid accomplishment at the master's level, and offer the promise of superior achievement at the doctoral level. In determining admission to the graduate program, the Graduate Committee weighs an applicant's grade-point average, letters of recommendation, writing sample (mandatory for Ph.D. applicants), interest in a field of history for which there is supporting graduate faculty, and degree of previous exposure to history.

The History Department offers MA and PhD programs of study in a wide range of fields. MA areas of concentration include U.S., Canadian, European, and East Asian history, environmental history, the history of labor, technology, and immigration, women's history, international history, the history of cartography, and spatial and digital history. The PhD program specializes in U.S. history, Canadian-American history (including borderland studies), and international history. PhD candidates will normally enter the program having completed an MA in History or a related discipline, though other advanced degrees will be considered.
