As the cornerstone of a liberal arts education, the study of History provides perspective on present-day problems and helps us to understand past cultures and society. As an academic discipline, its mastery requires recognition of the uniqueness of as well as patterns in past human experiences.<br><br>The mission of the Department of History is to prepare students to become informed citizens, capable of thinking critically about the past and its relevance to the present. We help students develop the analytical, research, and communication skills necessary to excel in their careers, particularly in teaching, law, business, public history, and public service, as well as in graduate school.
