The faculty in the History MA program is at the forefront of traditional historical study, digital approaches to the past, and applied history. As a student, you will select from a rich variety of course topics while also choosing an area of historical specialization that accommodates your interests and furthers your career objectives. You will learn in small classes led by nationally recognized historians who engage and challenge you, and have the opportunity to learn cutting-edge digital skills or participate in internships that prepare you for careers that reach far beyond academia.Students come to our program with diverse intellectual interests and career objectives, and we have designed our program with that diversity in mind. Because classes are offered in the evening, students can combine coursework with their current careers. You will take classes in which you discuss history alongside public historians, teachers, military officers, non-profit professionals, government officials, entrepreneurs, and future academics. This experience is uniquely stimulating and fits a variety of career goals.Our graduates do history in many places. Some work in distinguished public history institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Library of Congress, and the National Park Service. Others have been highly successful at private companies such as Blackboard. Students who already have full-time jobs use their MA degrees to advance within their existing careers. Students have pursued further education in history at the PhD level at schools such as American University, Georgetown, McGill University, Michigan State, Rice University, University of Virginia, Yale, and in Mason's own history PhD program.
