Applicants who already hold an MA in History earned in the last six years, are eligible to apply to our PhD program. Applicants with a Master's degree awarded in the last six years in a closely related discipline (including, but not limited to, American Studies, Latin American Studies, Medieval Studies, etc.) and whose training was primarily historical may petition the departmental Graduate Committee to apply directly to the PhD program. Permission will be granted on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Dr. Daniel Riches, the Director of Graduate Studies, to make such a request: dlriches@ua.edu.
Each international applicant must hold the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited institution to be eligible for graduate admission. While individual departments may have more stringent requirements, bachelor degrees from Bologna Accord certified institutions are considered to meet this criterion. We do also consider Indian three-year degrees to be equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree.

Award-winning and internationally recognized faculty serve graduate students in a program that provides opportunities for close mentorship and advising. With a strong commitment to research and teaching, as well as training the next generation of historians, the faculty have published extensively and are active participants in national and international historical organizations. History is one of the most important of the liberal arts, studies that lie at the core of a university education. The liberal arts help prepare students not merely to make a living, but also to fashion a meaningful life. The study of humanity's past, in particular, provides the foundation for understanding the world and the necessary knowledge and wisdom to responsibly shape the future.
