The Department of History of Art and Architecture treats critically the major fields in global art and architecture, from ancient through contemporary, and serves to connect the arts to the other humanities. Interdisciplinary by definition, the department encourages students to develop both visual and cultural literacy through extensive study of art, architecture, and material culture and the historical contexts in which they were created. More subtle and ambiguous than written language, such works offer a narrative parallel to texts that are both complementary and contradictory. This ability to see, understand, interpret, and evaluate images of all types is an important skill in our increasingly visual world. From cave painting to computer-generated virtual realities, our students engage with the visual legacy of the past and ongoing cultural phenomena.

The department offers a major in history of art, a major in architecture and the built environment, and minors in both those fields. Students who major in history of art or in architecture and the built environment take advanced seminars related to the faculty's areas of research and publication. These courses offer an important opportunity to interact closely with professors while pursuing a focused research topic.

Vanderbilt's Visual Resources Center is an important resource for majors in our department. The center is a dynamic entity, not only providing imaging services and a searchable online image database, but also facilitating cutting-edge digital humanities projects through fearless exploration of engaging new technologies. Students also have access to the Artstor digital image library for advanced undergraduate research. Finally, the university's Fine Arts Gallery oversees an active program of exhibitions and a varied study collection related to history of art and architecture courses.
