The final stage of the application process includes an in-person interview, the purpose of the interview is to assess your ASL and English skills, as well as your knowledge of Deaf culture. For details on what to expect at the interview, see the ASL Interview Process (PDF 121KB).

IELTS: minimum score of 6.0 on each test (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum test scores of 80 on the Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT), 60 on the Paper-Delivered Test, or 550 on the Paper-Based Test.
Official transcripts You must submit your official transcript(s) for courses required for admission. We request verification of your complete academic history, including any college or university you attended
Interim transcripts If youre currently enrolled in courses required for admission, you must submit an interim transcript. Your official final grades must be submitted by the deadline specified in your admission letter.
Transcripts must be emailed to Admissions at documents@nscc.ca by the issuing institution. Official transcripts may also be dropped off in a sealed envelope at any NSCC campus or mailed to NSCC Admissions using the address to the left.
If youre a current Nova Scotia high school student, please provide your Nova Scotia student ID number (can be found on your high school transcript or in PowerSchool) when you apply. We'll retrieve your transcript on your behalf.

As an interpreter, you're the crucial link between two very different worlds. You take a message from English, in a hearing-world context, and place it in American Sign Language (ASL), in a Deaf-cultural context. And you do the same in reverse. As an interpreter, you require excellent social and interpersonal skills, as well as emotional stamina and agility. It's your job to protect the integrity of communication by not changing or influencing its meaning, both audiences depend on you to understand each other. In your first year, you focus on Deaf culture, advanced-level American Sign Language (ASL), pre-interpretation skills and the theory of interpretation. In your second year, you focus on the practice of interpretation.<br>Work experience<br>Field experience is a mandatory credit course, providing you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills outside of the classroom.<br>Opportunities are typically unpaid and last approximately 5 weeks.<br>This program is eligible for an optional cooperative education (co-op) credit course between year one and two.<br>Co-op provides an opportunity for paid, full-time employment in a field related to your program.<br>Co-op takes place in third term and must be a minimum of 12 weeks and 420 hours.<br>Our co-op program follows Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL) guidelines.<br>Transportation, accommodations and other costs related to work experience are your responsibility.<br>Career options<br>There's a shortage of qualified interpreters within this province and beyond.
