Consider the impact of race and racism on communities around the world and investigate possible solutions to race inequalities in contemporary society. This course will give you an understanding of the different types of racism, their varying histories and how they affect different groups of people in the 21st century. You will explore the field of critical ethnic studies and examine migration, ethnic cleansing, refugeedom and the status of refugees across the globe. Through the study of critical whiteness, you will analyse what whiteness means and the privileges associated with it in different contexts. You will also look at race in the news and popular culture, investigating how the media cover racism and race-related stories and how audiences react to this information. In addition, you will study core modules on black feminist theory and race, gender and culture.
