The Ph.D. in Mathematics allows study in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The mathematics department has over 60 faculty, approximately 100 Ph.D. students, and approximately 35 Masters students. The Ph.D. in Mathematics program produces graduates with a preparation in teaching and a broad knowledge of mathematics. Our students go on to careers as university professors, as well as careers in industry or government. At UC San Diego, we provide courses of study that introduce students to the fundamentals of mathematics and allow them to master the most important parts of the subject both pure and applied. By offering four graduate programs, and with a faculty encompassing a variety of fields, the department seeks to accommodate varied student interests in mathematics, encouraging an interdisciplinary focus that fosters program diversity.
