We do not require a specific undergraduate major, however, we do look closely at your transcript to see if you have taken classes that are relevant for counseling

A personal statement which defines the applicant's motivation to seek graduate study and future career ambitions
3 letters of recommendation from persons who can speak to the applicant's academic potential and to their personal qualifications for graduate study in counseling. At least 2 of your references must be from current or former academic instructors.
If you graduated more than 10 years ago, references from current or former academic instructors are strongly preferred. Other references should speak to the applicant's ability to be successful in a graduate school context with details and observations that could transfer into an academic context.

The M.S. program in School Counseling P-12 prepares graduates to be thoughtful, responsive, and empathetic counselors in educational settings who advocate for their students and provide support in line with contemporary expectations and cutting-edge best practices.<br><br>This program in the Department of Counseling and Human Services provides helps students develop the dispositions, knowledge, and skills to promote the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. Graduates are change agents who develop and implement holistic, data-driven school counseling programs that include both direct and indirect services, program planning, and management. This CACREP-accredited program follows the national model and standards of the American School Counselor Association and the National Board of Certified Counselors, and meets the academic requirements for intial and professional New York State certification as a School Counselor.<br><br>100% employment rate at graduation over the past 3 years.<br><br>The School Counseling master's program requires 60 graduate credits. Most students complete the program full-time in 2 years (including two summers), although careful planning with an advisor can allow for part-time study while working, although the program must be completed within 7 years.<br><br>Students will take courses in various forms and venues of counseling, human development, and counseling specifically in a school setting. Youll also choose specialty electives in close collaboration with your advisors, tailored to your personal and professional interests in areas like counseling leadership, college and career counseling, substance abuse, and more.
