The Department of Geological Sciences (GS) offers Ph.D. and M.S. programs in a wide range of fields, including surface processes, geomorphology, geomechanics, structural and regional geology, tectonics, sedimentary geology and basin analysis, life and planetary evolution, petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy and mineral physics, environmental geology, geochronology and thermochronology, and geostatistics. The breadth of research in the department provide numerous opportunities for field-based research, laboratory and numerical experiments, modern applications of instrumental analysis and spectroscopy to problems in the earth sciences.
GRE - GRE scores are not required to apply and will not be reviewed.
Supplemental Questions
In addition to the standard application materials, e.g., personal statement, letters of reference and GPA etc., the Geological Sciences graduate program requires a supplement to assess your academic achievement and potential. All applicants are required to answer the supplemental questions in the online application. A reference document of the supplemental questions can be found on the GS Supplemental Application document here.

The geological sciences include the study of Earth materials and processes and how those materials and processes have changed over the planet's 4.56-billion-year history and vary across other planets. More specifically, courses and research within the department address: the chemical and physical makeup and properties of minerals, rocks, soils, sediments, and water, the formation and evolution of Earth and other planets, the processes that shape planetary surfaces and interiors, the stratigraphic, paleobiological, and geochemical records of Earth history including changes in climate, oceans, and atmosphere, the observation and robotic exploration of other planets, present-day, historical, and long-term feedbacks between the geosphere and biosphere, and the origin and occurrence of our natural resources.

Besides the fundamental nature of research performed within the department, it has critical implications for the study and remediation of natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and floods), environmental and geological engineering, surface and groundwater management, the assessment, exploration, and extraction of energy, mineral and water resources, ecology and conservation biology, remediation of contaminated water and soil, geological mapping and land use planning, sustainability, human health and the environment, and space exploration.
