Geography is a unique discipline that brings together the social and natural sciences by studying humanity and the way it interacts with the physical features of the earth. If you think working with maps, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and online mapping resources like Google Earth might be interesting, then you may want to study Geography and Environmental Sustainability.
UTSA's Geography and Environmental Sustainability degree will introduce you to modern academic geography and help you get involved in the local, regional and international community. Youll learn about the physics of climate change, the interaction of weather events and flood risk, and the way people's behavior is influenced by the space around them. You can also choose a concentration in Social Studies. Concentrations are declared after youve been admitted and have met with your academic advisor.
This program will prepare you for a career as a geographer, where youll work to transform maps from a two-dimensional representation of a tool that illustrates social attributes or attitudes to reveal not just where people live, but how they live and what they think.
As part of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Signature Experience, which seeks to offer students opportunities to apply ideas and knowledge in real-world settings, the Department encourages students to enroll in mentorship courses such as an Internship, Independent Study, Study Abroad, and Research Practicum. Majors may apply 3 or 6 semester credit hours of internship study to their baccalaureate program. Internships entail supervised workplace experience, allowing the integration of academic and practitioner learning. The internship coordinator of the Department of Political Science and Geography oversees placement. Department faculty members provide supervision and grade internship performance. Further information can be obtained from the internship coordinator.
