Statement of Purpose
Bachelor's (undergraduate) degree earned or will be earned before entering. In general, applicants should have at least a 3.0(B) grade point average (or the equivalent) in their undergraduate work. Some departments at Rice University require scores on the aptitude portion of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) as an appropriate advanced test, these should be sent directly to the admitting department. Applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL test and should score at least 90 on the iBT (internet-based) TOEFL, at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL or score 250 on the computer-based TOEFL. For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7. Admission is open to Rice junior and senior students who have shown academic excellence in their undergraduate studies

The Energy Geoscience (formerly Subsurface Geoscience) program is geared for students who have a geoscience background and would like to become proficient in their area of interest. Students can choose from four focus areas that will prepare them to apply geological knowledge and geophysical methods to find and develop reserves of oil and natural gas, or to hone their skills in manipulating and managing energy-related data, or refit or expand their skill-set to the new areas of the on-going energy transition.<br><br>The core requirements for the degree are strong technical courses, management and policy courses, with communication skills training, and include an industrial internship or work experience. Students select a group of elective courses from a focus area (see below), or from a variety of other courses related to their interests.
