Applicants may apply for admission to only one (1) program at a time.
For admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must hold either 1) a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or 2) a post-secondary degree that is equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree earned from an officially recognized degree-granting international institution.
Ordinarily, an entering student must have completed in a satisfactory manner a minimum of course work in designated areas, the specific courses and amount of work depending upon the intended field of advanced study.
Admission is granted jointly by the Graduate School and the graduate program in which the student plans to study. The establishment of standards by which applicants are admitted is the responsibility of the graduate program.
Standardized test scores (as required by the graduate program) English Proficiency--The language of instruction at Penn State is English. International applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test. Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisional admission, which requires an institutional test of English proficiency upon first enrollment and, if necessary, remedial course work.
The minimum composite score for the IELTS is 6.5. A minimum grade-point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) is required for the junior/senior years of the baccalaureate degree and in all courses in the biological and physical sciences regardless of when taken. Admission to the Ph.D. program requires an M.S. or equivalent degree in natural science with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 for the master's program. Three letters of recommendation. Statement of Purpose. This is a 1-2 page essay describing the applicant's reasons for considering graduate study, goals after completion of the graduate degree, and the applicant's specific areas of interest.

This is a research-oriented degree for those who expect to terminate their education at graduation or to proceed for the Ph.D. degree. The M.S. or equivalent degree is the normal prerequisite for the Ph.D. program in the Soil Science Program.<br><br>Whether terminal or doctoral-oriented, the objectives of M.S. studies are:<br><br>enhanced understanding of an area of science beyond the baccalaureate level<br>attainment of scientific research skills<br>The M.S. candidates are just beginning their research careers and are expected to require considerable guidance in choosing and executing their thesis research projects. However, upon completion of the M.S., the students are expected to have developed the capacity for independent research.<br><br>In addition to the general requirements for the M. S. degree as defined by the Graduate School, the department requires six credits of 400- or 500-level formal courses in a minor or general studies area.<br><br>An advisory committee will be appointed for each student and additional courses and requirements may be determined by this committee. A thesis based on field or laboratory research is required for the M. S. degree.
